Food allergies are a common cause of skin irritation in dogs, and most vets and dog owners will agree that they can cause a great deal of discomfort to your four legged friend.

There is quite a lot of misinformation about allergies to food in dogs. Here are the important things you need to know about this condition.

1. The symptoms of food allergy in dogs can also occur with many other skin diseases. So, you can't look at your dog and say with certainty that his red irritated skin and itchy ears are definitely caused by something he's eating. Dogs with a food allergy are usually very itchy on the face, feet, and ears. They can scratch themselves until they break the skin and it becomes infected. It's very distressing to see your dog so miserable.

2. Your dog doesn't develop a sensitivity to that new food you've just started giving him. Dogs become allergic to a food that's been a regular part of their diet for several years. Like people, they are often sensitive to wheat, corn, lamb and dairy products, but in reality, they can react to any component of their diet.

3. It's not always easy to prove that your dog's itchy skin is due to a food allergy. There are other causes of similar symptoms, such as atopy, an allergy to pollens and dust in the air. You can visit a dermatologist and have skin tests done to see what he's allergic to, but it's easier and cheaper to do a food trial at home. After all, when you visit a dermatologist, he'll often ask you if you've done a food trial yet. What this involves is feeding your dog something he's never eaten before. That way he won't be allergic to it, and his skin should clear up. You need to think of a new protein source to feed him, perhaps fish or venison, and a new carbohydrate source. Feed him this for 8 weeks, with no additional foods, table scraps, training treats or anything. That's the hard part, but it's worth doing. If his skin improves, then you know what he's eating is contributing to his itchy skin.

4. If you've done your food trial and confirmed that his diet is a problem, the next step is treating it. This takes as much commitment as diagnosing it in the first place. You basically have to figure out what parts of his diet are the problem and never feed them to him again. So, choose one part of his regular diet, such as beef. Feed it to him for two weeks, and watch his reaction. If he starts scratching again, stop feeding it, and add it to the list of foods he can't have. If he doesn't start scratching, then it goes on the list of "okay" foods. This is another long slow process, but you'll eventually end up with two lists of foods: one list of those that are safe for him to eat, and another list of foods that will cause him to react and start scratching. At this point, you can basically treat his food allergy by just feeding him from the list of foods that don't make him itch. You shouldn't need to use any medication, or you'll need considerably less, which is much safer for his health.

5. While your dog is going through this long process, there are other things that you can do to make him feel more comfortable. Antibiotics will control the secondary infection in his skin, and a gentle oatmeal shampoo will soothe the itch and irritation. and if you wish, you can include a leave-in oatmeal conditioner. Don't forget to be meticulous about your dog's flea control - it would be a shame to work so hard on managing his food allergy if he was to continue scratching because of fleas.

Food allergies are hard work, but it's very much worthwhile going through this long arduous process. It can mean you are able to control your dog's skin inflammation and stop him scratching, without resorting to potentially harmful medication. Isn't that worth it?

There were mixed reviews of my devil and angel costume so mommy got all confused.

I went to a really fun picnic in Minnesota yesterday! This is my second year and my mom's third year going.

This year there were over 50 eskies!! My mommy couldn't always find me because we all look so much alike!

This is me and my Mom. She's a little excited by all these eskies.

The Couches hosted the event and they have a great back yard. Huge and also have a pond!

They also have a fence with "port holes" that we eskies can look through. Cool, huh?

This little guy was just dog gone tired. I so understand that saying now! I slept like a rock!

Rescued Puppy from Kennewick County Puppy Mill

This is Heath. He is one of over 370 American Eskimo dogs that were rescued from a puppy mill in Washington state. Many of the dogs were found living in shopping carts and wooden crates. They will all undernourished and covered in urine and feces. They've never been socialied or potty trained. Heath's foster mom has started a blog. We hope you will check out his progress. Mommy said we would be a Dilly bar again, but now she said tomorrow. What's up with that? Just because of a little rain?

As you can see this was a great year but I really hated the Elvi event on ice. But Mom said I would look back on it and think it was funny. Well, not there yet! They were weird!

Hey, finally good weather in MN. The city of Wayzata has a golf tourney on Lake Minnetonka! Fun!

We went out to Lake Minnetonka today and they had a golf tourney on the ice!

We kind of go crazy mid-winter in MN because we get cabin fever.

So Mom takes me out on the lake and what do we see but Elvis! I didn't like him, but she made me take a pic with him.

Then two more Elvis's showed up! I hated that more.

Then a fourth Elvis showed up ! We liked him best. Note the real chest hair. LOL

Hey! My mom got me some booties because it is so darn cold in Minnesota and I can't stay out very long without having to sit down and lick my frozen feet.

We have lots of snow and there is also salt mixed in with it, so my booties protect me from that too.

There's only one problem. Mommy doesn't get the booties on well enough and when I start running through the snow banks......

My booties come off. Here I have lost the front two.

Oh well, at least they helped for a while. -5 is the high for today. Brrrr...

A "New" Old Toy

This is one of my favorite toys!

You've probably all seen it. It's a big ball with tiny squeaky balls inside. I've eat through two of them and Mom got me another. I've already destuffed many of the little balls.

I got it because my mommy bought me new snowboots. I don't like the, but the really protect my feet from cold and the road chemicals.

The fit well, but I still walk really funny in them.

At least I have new toys to make up for the stupid booties.

Annie's Story

Little Orphan Annie was found in a snowbank near Glenwood, MN and brought to the local Humane Society by a Good Samaritan. It was discovered that she had been shot twice! One rifle shot went through her neck, including through her esophagus. The other went through her abdomen and exited through her chest, fracturing a rib and puncturing through her diaphragm. She was transported down to the ICU at the U of MN Vet Hospital. This is the only place with the specialists who could do the esophogeal surgery should she require it.

Annie is incredibly sweet and beautiful -- a dark red, petite female. She is young --about 2 years old they think. Despite having to increase her pain meds for a painful tummy, she was wagging her tail at visitors.

The latest update from the RAGOM website is this:
Annie is likely to be released in the next day or two! Her drains have all been removed. Her IV is still in for antibiotics but they are switching her to oral meds today. She is eating hamburger and rice. The swelling is down in her legs and the holes are not leaking fluid anymore. Her pneumonia is not resolving very quickly and her protien is slow to rebound. Dr. Gray said she is trying not to pay so much attention to the lab results and is trying to look at the patient instead. And Annie looks pretty bright today! Lots of tail wags and nose pushes for pets. Annie's Christmas stocking is filling up with treats! She is not too interested right now (she has hamburger after all) but we will make sure she gets to take them home with her.

It has been so cold and snowy lately that I get to spend very little time outdoors. My feet get really cold and I can't walk. My dogwalker uses booties on me but my mommy can't get them on me correctly so I keep losing them. This morning it was -11 degrees. Up to 4 inches of snow predicted for tomorrow.

I'll just stay inside and play with my new toy. Keep warm and safe guys! And those of you who live in the warm: PPFFHHHTTT!

No More Table Sitting

So you all know I love to sit on mommy's glass dining room table. She decided that it wasn't a good idea and moved the chairs so I can't get up there anymore.

However, that doesn't stop me from sitting by the table trying to figure out how go get up there. (Notice the chairs turned towards the wall?)

So I just sit by the table and pout. Please ignore mommy's ironing on the chair.

So now my new place is on mommy's computer desk on the left. She was sitting right there so I was trying to see if maybe I could sit on my crate. Decisions, decisions!

I am currently in my crate -- mommy is happy with that.

Today Mommy went to a dog show while I stayed home and hung out.

Table Sitting

Many of you were right when you guessed that one of the first things I did when I got home was go hang out on Mommy's glass table. She moved the chairs but I still managed to get up by jumping far. She has since figured out how to move the chairs so I can't get up. Now I just sit by the table and pout.

I got tired of that and came over to the couch by Mommy.

Then I got ready for my nap. Mommy loves my feet here.

She has a total thing about doggie paws. She even likes to sniff them because they smell like Fritos!!

Hey, I'm back at home after a fun 2 weeks at my first Mommy Mary's house. I had lots of fun there. I dug in her plants and chewed her couch and played with all my relatives and friends.

Then it was time to take a nap.

A New Season

I was taking pictures today of the beautiful fall colors and it reminded me of last year. It was about this time last year that I started my "Blog With Dogs" with my baby Clive. Today was gorgeous and at the same time made me sad because of the memories and the changes that have happened over this last year. I lost Clive on January 26 and I adopted my beautiful, young, Kodak in April.

My Mommy brought me to the pet store and bought a new toy. I took it out of her purse and got away with it even before we got in the house.

Then I didn't even want to go in because it was gorgeous out!

She shows and breeds eskies and she is also an obedience trainer. I got to spend the weekend with her and the rest of my family. It was so fun! I am in the middle right.

Play Date with Duffy

I had a play date with my neighbor, Duffy. This is a rare moment that we are sitting still. We usually chase, play and tumble constantly. Duffy has a pink eye. There isn't anything wrong with it, it's just that the pigment around one eye is pink.

My Neighbor, Sully

Hey, meet my neighbor,Sully. He is a huge lab. Very gentle and playful.

We went to check out the park and ran into some other neighbors. Aren't they beautiful? The greyhound is a rescue from a Wisconsin racing track.

And the great dane is so beautiful and gentle. In this picture you can't even tell how big he is until you look at how he is waste high with his owner. He is just like a gentle, small, pony. Very cool.

After they left we played some more in the softball field. FUN!!

Mommy went to the grand opening of The Hotel Minneapolis last night. It was lots of fun. They had really good food like crab claws, oysters on the half shell, shrimp, and other yummy appetizers. But the best part of the night was:

This is Morris Day and the Time. They were really big in the 1980's because of Prince and the movie "Purple Rain". A couple of the members, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, went on to produce for really big stars like Janice Jackson. They all reunited last night in a small little venue and mommy rocked out!

My First Swimming Lesson

Mommy wanted to teach me to swim. It wasn't so easy because the shoreline has rocks until about thigh deep and they are slippery. So mommy lifted me off the dock and held me close.

Then she took loosened her grip and let me splash around.

They I really splashed and tried to get on top of the water. We didn't do this very long because mommy didn't want me stressed. I was a little nervous. But I sure wanted to do zoomies afterward!

After boating and swimming we had dessert! Blueberry pie!!

Then it was time for bed.

My First Pontoon Ride

Hey guys! I went up to Northern Minnesota this weekend and went for my first boat/pontoon ride. Come along!!

This is me with my mommy. I stuck to her like glue -- except to explore the pontoon just a little. I couldn't help myself!

We saw some really big homes.

And some really cute little cabins.

Also beautiful, wild shoreline.

We also saw a bald eagle. Can you see it high in the single tree on the left? Not a great shot, but was so cool to glide right below him.

Bities and Innocence

My last blog my mommy said I was in her plant and made a big mess. She thought she had a picture of me with dirt around my mouth and was going to post it tonight. BUT, she downloaded and NO SUCH PICTURE EXISTS!!! Innocent!! Thanks for all of you standing by me!

I finally got around to playing with and gutting my present that I picked out for my birthday way back on June 16.

I then got friskey and decided to play bitey hand with mommy. She doesn't like it but I would rather play with her hands than a toy.

She took her hands away and I tried to play bitey feet!!

So then I tried to play bitey knee!!

Then there was nothing more to bite so I was in a little frenzy.

So I did zoomies! I was so fast, bet you can't even find me in this picture.

Mom took me to the baseball field today to chase the tennis ball.

You probably can't see the great grooming job I had last week. But I am all clean and spunky.

Someone had left some dog food in the ball field and I found it right away. It as a yummy treat. Anything but my regular dog food tastes sooo good.

I did have to stop and rest in the shade on our way home. We've had great weather here lately. The humidity is gone and we've had great cool nights. It's good to turn off the airconditioning so I can smell all those doggies walking by

Good News

Good news! Papa is out of the hospital and at home. The drugs are helping him to get better and killing all those parasites in his blood. Hurray for modern medicine!! He is not out of the woods yet, but is on the road to recovery.

Here I am enjoying my lambie! My mom didn't take pictures of her chewed up earphones -- the third pair I have gone through in as many weeks. When will she learn to close her purse and keep it out of my reach?!!! And she blames me. How can I expect to resist such temptation?!

Babesia or Babesiosis

I have to rest up from all the excitement this weekend. Mommy ran in a 5K, The Hennepin Lake Classic, on Sunday. She used to run alot but then got lazy for about 18 years. So this was the first 5K she ran in 18 years! Woowoo! Then she found out that her Dad (my Papa) was in the hospital. He had been very sick with a high fever for over a week and they didn't know what was wrong with him. He had very low platelets and white blood cells. He finally found out yesterday that he has Babesia. It is a parasitic blood infection that he probably got from a woodtick. He doesn't remember ever having a tick, but some of them can be so small you don't see them. The symptoms are very similar to malaria. They gave him plasma to help his blood and started him on some medicine, so we are hoping he gets better very soon. It was very scary.

My new thing lately is jumping in the tub to get drinks of water.

I don't splash at all. I just drink

Cousins' One Year Birthday Party

It was my cousins' first birthday today. We celebrated yesterday at a park with all sorts of friends. This is Harrison and Christopher. Now we are all one year old!

Their Mommy and Daddy got special cakes just for them!!

And they let them each have a half of a cake!!! Woowoo!! You go boys!

My Grandpa Rush

Hey, meet my Grandpa Rush! This is Rush and his Dad, Dave. I got to see him at the Eskie Picnic. Rush was invited to Westminster! They never did go because it costs so very much and is a huge commitment. But what an honor. He attained the rank of #1 in 2005 and was subsequently named 'Show dog of the Year for 2005 by the NAEDA.

I'm a little distracted -- guess I wouldn't be so good at Westminster.

Eskie Picnic Part 2

We had a wonderful time at the American Eskimo picnic in Champlin, Minnesota. The Couches were wonderful to host the picnic in their backyard.

It was a warm day, so lots of furbabies decided to cool off in the pond.
